About this project
Mokattam is a hill range located in the Cairo city suburbs. Beyond wide views that we are able to see from the top, the location is also known for the slums that exist in the base of these hills. Manshiyat Nasser, also known as Garbage City, is the largest settlement is Mokattam with about 30.000 residents. The people from this slum is called Zabbaleen (garbage people). They are almost all Coptic Christians and an integral part of collecting and processing Cairo’s trash. Notably, the Zabbaleen are able to recycle up to 85 percent of the waste that they collect, while industrial companies only can achieve about 25 percent.
